GOD, MUSIC & ME
It was a week ago and I could still not forget that one blessed night, a night of worship and praise. Alas! I was able to watch Hillsong United, and at this time, with Hillsong Young and Free. These guys are so amazing! I was so astonished when I saw how they perform on stage, how they dance and sing joyfully to God.
Just a little background, I was able to know this band when I joined a Catholic Community called "Singles for Christ". It was one of our gatherings when I heard the song, "Still" which really captured my heart. That was the time when I was so anxious and worried about the future. It was a time of darkness and this song gave me hope specifically this verse:
"When the oceans rise and thunders roar
I will soar with You above the storm
Father, You are King over the flood
I will be still, know You are God"
Since then, I fell in love with their music and even joined in the Worship Ministry. I started to search their playlist, watch them in YouTube, memorise their songs and many more. As time goes on, I realised their songs impacted my prayer life and most importantly, my relationship with God.
So now let me share with you how I'm immensely blessed. There is a story behind every
song that you can resonate with. Here are some of my personal favorites:
It was few years ago when a strong typhoon hit the southern part of the Philippines. I can still remember the heavy rains falling on our rooftop and the gustiness of the wind outside. My Mom and I prayed the rosary and the more we uttered "Hail Mary", we felt that the storm is getting worse. I was terrified, so I decided to get my earphones and listened to this song. It was the first time that I worshipped so loudly and through this song, God reminded me to be still.
I went through spiritual dryness countless times and even questioned God. When I'm hearing this song, it tells me that God will lead the way as He is the captain of our ship called life.
HERE NOW (MADNESS)
This makes me feel God's presence, knowing that He is always there everywhere I go.
EVEN WHEN IT HURTS
When I was still part of the Music Ministry, there were times when I didn't want to serve
because I felt that I'm unworthy to worship and give Him praise. But it has to be the other way around as the song says, "Even when it hurts like hell, I'll praise You".
Several times in my life that I wanted to give up, to just surrender and let God control
everything that is happening in my life. In surrendering, I was able to know God more.
TOUCH THE SKY
I initially heard this as a wedding song. I realized this is a song about commitment, your
covenant with God.
"Your love so deep is washing over me. Your face is all I seek. You are my everything". Thanks to this song for making me feel God's unconditional love.
BROKEN VESSELS (AMAZING GRACE)
This one is from Hillsong Worship, one of the songs closest to my heart because this is where I decided to turn back to God. I felt so ashamed of myself because of the past mistakes and sins that I have committed. By God's grace, He was able to save a wretch like me and raise me to life.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NAME
Indeed, the name of Jesus is so wonderful and powerful!
OCEANS (WHERE FEET MY FAIL)
Finally, the song I offer wholeheartedly to Jesus. When I first heard this, I became emotional and I imagined the scene in Matthew 14:22-36 when Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water towards Jesus. This song really touched my heart and soul. This song reminds me that God won't forsake me. Even if I'm facing the unknown, I have to put my trust and faith in Him.
"Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Saviour"
So that's it! They are not just bringing beautiful music to our souls, but more than that, they give us hope and draw us closer to Jesus through heartfelt worship. I hope you have been blessed as I am!
And by the way, this article won't end without giving thanks to Mr. Ikigai for giving this opportunity to contribute on this page. May God continue to bless you!
