Perhaps there’s no better way of knowing our maximum potential as a person other than putting us into “test”. Choosing a Christian living exposes us to many tests or more straightforwardly “temptations”. Our enemies are so persistent to take us back to our old ways. Often, it is within us that we find our own adversaries, which is why it is but logical to Know Thyself!
I don’t think I would ever be able to count how many times I have been tempted to sin, so much so, how many times I actually gave in to it. Sometimes even voluntarily. I am such a lousy weak spirit. I give up so easily and get caught up in condemnation in the end. If there’s anything positive that this defeat ever contributed in my life is that it slows me from judging others by simply knowing that I too is susceptible to sin and that I actually volunteered most of the time. It humbles me in such a way that I can see myself in every person who go through the same struggle. I know I am no better Christian/person than any others. Resisting temptation is never easy but is doable with God’s aid. Jesus himself faced with the temptations of the enemy in the wilderness, but He is pure. He needed not to wrestle with sin but simply shrugged it off. Perhaps, it is to show us that through him, we can also gain triumph over temptations... over ourselves.
I ain’t no expert in resisting temptations but I thought there is three steps to shrugging it off our path:
ASK IN PRAYERS
“God help me!” I don’t think there is ever a need for lengthy prayers when you are faced with temptations. Ask God right away for his help. He knows what’s going on but be the first to ask for help. Asking for God’s help is already a declaration of fight against temptation. Trust that he is right at that very moment taking you away from darkness.
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12
FIGHT AGAINST IT
With all your might fight against it! Try your very best to fight for your innocence, purity, and life. Take important note of the things that sin is taking away from you.
“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” 1 Corinthian 10:13
REPEAT: PRAY & FIGHT
Accept that fighting temptation can be a hard battle. That is why we are not left alone. God is with us. Always. Also remember that Jesus did not come to this world to convict us, but rather, he came for you and I to be redeemed and saved. Whenever you find yourself defeated by temptation and sin, pick up yourself quickly and as Jesus said it “...go and sin no more” John 8:11
Moreover, Know thyself! You are not define by your sin. You are define by the one who created you. Know that you are made in the image of God, of Love, of Light, of Truth, of Hope. Temet Nosce!
